Contract talks between government and the doctors suspended

Contract negotiations between government and the Newfoundland and Labrador Medical Association have broken off. The news comes in the wake of comments made by Premier Danny Williams who said the association’s contract demands are too high and would not even be considered. The NLMA says it was government’s decision to suspend talks, not theirs. Tensions have been escalating since the details of recent lab review were released, a report the health minister described as “scathing”. He also compared the doctors to squabbling school children, based on what he read in the report. The premier supported the minister’s comments, and said his own criticisms would have been even more dramatic; however, the NLMA felt the minister’s comments were too harsh and unhelpful. The NLMA’s executive committee met last night, and is expected to comment on the suspension of contract talks sometime today.
